Urinary Excretion of Individual 17-ketosteroids by Normal Children.

چکیده
Our knowledge of the functions of the normal and diseased adrenal cortex in adults is still slight and we know even less about it in newborn babies and in children. In the past few years an increasing number of methods for examining adrenal function have been described. In addition to the determination of the total amount of 17-ketosteroids (17-KS) and of 17-hydroxycorticoids (17-OH) excreted in urine, various methods for fractionating these compounds have been used, which are more suitable for studying normal function and various pathological mechanisms of the adrenal gland and of the gonads. Although data on adults exist, there is little information available on the determination of individual 17-KS from the urine of children. Therefore, it seemed to us useful to determine the urinary steroids in healthy children of various ages.

Urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids in children.
Determination of the urinary excretion of 1 7-ketosteroids (17-oxosteroids) is the most important laboratory test in the investigation of endocrine disorders involving the adrenal cortex and gonads in children. The normal range of excretion varies with the method employed, since non-steroidal pigment may to a greater or lesser degree be measured as 17-ketosteroid. It is important therefore to k...
متن کاملURINARY excretion of 17-ketosteroids in scurvy.
Cholesterol and ascorbic acid of adrenals are significantly diminished in scorbutic guinea pigs (1). As these substances appear to be related to the formation of adrenal cortical hormone (a), it has been indicated that the secretion of this hormone might diminish in scurvy. The urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids in females is said to depend almost entirely on the activity of the adrenal corte...
متن کاملA Quantitative Study of the Urinary Excretion of Hypophyseal Gonadotropin, Estrogen, and Neutral 17-ketosteroids of Normal Men.
The urinary output of hypophyseal gonadotropin by normal women has proven exceedingly variable from month to month (1, 2). Thus, the usefulness of gonadotropin assays for clinical purposes has been disappointing and is now limited to the demonstration of large excesses of hormone. The status of the gonadotropin assay as a potential diagnostic measure in men is still in doubt. More normal data a...

Sjovall (1944), studying the excretion of folliclestimulating hormone, found that 21 per cent. of female patients under the age of 40 years suffering from rheumatoid arthritis showed evidence of pituitary-ovarian dysfunction. Davison and others (1947) found no significant alteration in the excretion of 17-ketosteroids in eleven female patients with rheumatoid arthritis, but reported an increase...
